COURSE CURRICULUM

The Sonography program at Northwest Missouri State University is designed to provide students with a strong academic foundation during the first two years before transitioning into specialized sonography training. The curriculum focuses heavily on science, communication, and healthcare-related knowledge to prepare students for careers in medical imaging fields such as sonography and radiologic technology.In the first term, students begin with essential foundational courses including Mathematical Modeling or Precalculus Algebra, General Biology with lab, Composition I, and General Chemistry with lab. These courses help build a strong base in scientific concepts and academic skills. The University Seminar supports students in adjusting to college life and developing study strategies. By the second term, students move into more specialized healthcare-related subjects such as Anatomy for Allied Health, which is critical for understanding the structure of the human body. Additional courses like Composition II, Biomedical Ethics, and American Government contribute to both professional communication and ethical awareness.During the summer term, students typically complete Medical Terminology, an important course that familiarizes them with the language used in healthcare settings. This knowledge is essential for interpreting medical information and communicating effectively in clinical environments.In the following term, students continue building their scientific and interpersonal skills through courses like General Physics with lab, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, General Psychology, and Digital Literacy. These subjects enhance both technical understanding and patient interaction abilities. In the next phase, courses such as Physiology for Allied Health deepen students’ knowledge of how the human body functions, which is crucial for accurate imaging and diagnosis. Additional general education courses like literature, sociology, humanities, and American experience broaden students’ perspectives and communication skills.Overall, this structured pathway ensures that students develop the scientific knowledge, technical skills, and professional competencies needed to succeed in sonography programs and future healthcare careers.
