COURSE CURRICULUM

The Nanoscale Biology program at Northwest Missouri State University offers students a comprehensive and interdisciplinary approach to studying biological systems at the nanometer scale, which is smaller than cells but larger than most molecules. This rigorous Bachelor of Science program integrates biology, chemistry, physics, and mathematics to provide students with a strong foundation in both theory and laboratory techniques. From the very first semester, students engage in hands-on experiences through courses in general chemistry, biology, and precalculus, developing the analytical and quantitative skills necessary for advanced scientific study. In subsequent semesters, students progress to more specialized courses, including cell biology, organic chemistry, classical or general physics, genetics, and molecular biology, building the scientific knowledge base required for understanding complex nanoscale processes. The program emphasizes practical laboratory work, including isolating DNA, exploring cellular structures, and synthesizing nanoscale materials. Junior- and senior-level courses such as Nanoscale I and II, molecular biology, biotechnology techniques, and biochemistry provide students with in-depth experience in applying nanoscale principles to real-world biological problems. Additionally, students complete approved biology emphasis electives, giving flexibility to focus on areas such as microbiology, immunology, or research in cellular biology. Courses in biomedical ethics, social and behavioral sciences, humanities, and civics ensure that students develop well-rounded critical thinking, communication, and ethical reasoning skills.
