COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics program at Northwest offers students a structured path to develop strong analytical, quantitative, and problem-solving skills. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge with courses in calculus, statistics, computational reasoning, and an introduction to exploring math-related fields, alongside core courses in composition, oral communication, and general education requirements. This combination ensures students develop both mathematical and communication skills early in their studies.During the second year, students advance into probability and statistics, modeling, and additional math electives, while completing general education requirements such as social and behavioral sciences, life and physical sciences, and American government. This year balances theory with applied mathematics, preparing students for more advanced and specialized courses in later years.In the third year, students move into higher-level topics, including linear algebra, linear statistical models, and transition to proofs, which develops rigorous mathematical reasoning. Students also take general electives and courses in literature and global experiences, emphasizing interdisciplinary learning and cultural awareness. This year is pivotal for strengthening both abstract and applied mathematical skills.The fourth year focuses on advanced mathematics electives and culminates with a seminar in mathematics, allowing students to integrate and apply their learning in a capstone experience. Students also complete remaining general electives and fine arts requirements, rounding out a well-balanced curriculum.Across all four years, the program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical applications of mathematics, providing students with a solid foundation for careers in data analysis, actuarial science, education, research, business, and technology. With a combination of core mathematical courses, modeling, statistical analysis, and interdisciplinary learning, graduates of the Northwest Mathematics program leave with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to succeed in a wide range of analytical and quantitative careers.
