COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Marine Biology at Northwest Missouri State University is designed to give students a comprehensive foundation in biological sciences, chemistry, physics, mathematics, and oceanography, preparing them for careers in marine research, conservation, and environmental science. In the first year, students build foundational knowledge with courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, composition, and university seminar, establishing essential skills in scientific inquiry, critical thinking, and communication. The second year expands on these foundations with courses in botany or zoology, general chemistry II, physics, composition II, and digital literacy, allowing students to strengthen laboratory and analytical skills. By the third year, students progress to more advanced courses such as organic chemistry, physics II, invertebrate zoology, and statistics, while continuing studies in general biology and electives, preparing them for specialized marine biology coursework. Summer coursework includes intensive hands-on marine science classes at the University of Southern Mississippi’s Gulf Coast Research Laboratory, providing experience in oceanography, marine ecology, and field research techniques. Subsequent semesters focus on applied and interdisciplinary studies, including basic ecology, biological evolution and diversity, genetics, microbiology, animal anatomy and physiology, and geographic information systems, along with social and behavioral science courses to broaden scientific perspectives. Students also complete courses that enhance global and American experiences, communication, and electives in literature, government, and fine arts, supporting a well-rounded education. The final year culminates with a biological sciences seminar and upper-level biology electives, integrating knowledge and research skills to prepare students for professional careers or graduate study. Throughout the program, students gain expertise in surveying and analyzing marine organisms, conducting laboratory experiments, and applying ecological and evolutionary principles to marine systems. This comprehensive curriculum combines rigorous academic training, fieldwork, and laboratory experience, equipping graduates with the scientific knowledge, technical skills, and practical experience needed to succeed in marine biology, environmental research, and conservation-focused careers.
