COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Human Services at Northwest Missouri State University is designed to prepare students to work directly with individuals, families, groups, and communities while developing essential professional, analytical, and interpersonal skills. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge with courses in composition, general sociology, general psychology, digital literacy, fine arts, and oral communication, along with an introduction to human services, which provides an overview of the field and prepares students for success in subsequent courses. Science, humanities, and social science courses complement the curriculum to ensure a broad liberal arts foundation. The second year emphasizes applied skills, including developmental psychology, statistics, American government, the family, literature, and history, while students also begin exploring minors and electives to diversify their knowledge. In the third year, students focus on specialized human services topics, such as psychology at work, psychology of groups and teams, case management, principles of counseling, and race and ethnic issues in modern society. These courses develop practical skills in understanding workplace dynamics, group facilitation, counseling techniques, and culturally responsive practice. Students also continue coursework in their chosen minor and behavioral science electives to deepen expertise. The fourth year emphasizes professional preparation and integration of knowledge, with research methods in social science and a capstone field placement. This hands-on experience allows students to apply classroom learning to real-world settings, including needs assessment, case planning, care coordination, advocacy, program planning, and ethical decision-making. Throughout the program, students gain critical skills such as active listening, collaborative teamwork, and culturally informed practice, ensuring they are ready to enter the workforce as competent, empathetic human services professionals. By combining theory, practical application, and professional skill development, the program equips graduates to support individuals and communities effectively, navigate complex social systems, and contribute meaningfully to social service organizations, healthcare settings, educational programs, and community initiatives.
