COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geographic Information Science (GIS) emphasis within the Geography Comprehensive major at Northwest Missouri State University is a structured, 120-credit-hour program designed to give students expertise in spatial analysis, mapping, and geospatial technologies. The curriculum combines foundational coursework in geography, statistics, and the humanities with specialized GIS training, preparing students for careers in urban planning, remote sensing, environmental management, and related fields. In the first year, students take core courses such as University Seminar, Composition I & II, Introduction to Geography, People & Cultures of the World, and introductory earth and social sciences, establishing a strong academic foundation. The second and third years focus on developing spatial and analytical skills through courses like Maps & Spatial Reasoning, GPS Fundamentals, Economic Globalization, Web Mapping, and Geographic Information Systems (GIS). Students also complete life science and humanities requirements, as well as regional and systematic geography electives to broaden their understanding of global patterns and processes. Advanced GIS topics and technical applications are emphasized in the upper-level courses, including Digital Cartography & Geovisualization, Image Interpretation & Analysis, Advanced GIS, Remote Sensing, and Customized GIS, providing practical, hands-on experience with industry-standard software and technologies. Cognate electives allow students to integrate knowledge from related disciplines, while general electives offer flexibility to explore additional interests. Throughout the program, students engage in project-based learning that fosters critical thinking, problem-solving, and professional skills, culminating in a capstone research project through Geographic Approaches to Research. By the time students graduate, they have not only mastered the technical competencies of GIS but also developed a comprehensive understanding of geographic principles, spatial reasoning, and data visualization, ensuring they are competitive and career-ready in the rapidly growing geospatial industry.
