COURSE CURRICULUM

The general studies major at Northwest Missouri State University is a flexible, interdisciplinary program designed to give students a broad-based education while allowing them to pursue areas of personal interest through a variety of electives. The curriculum emphasizes foundational skills in reading, writing, communication, and critical thinking, while also promoting problem-solving and analytical abilities. In the first year, students focus on essential college-level coursework, including composition, digital literacy, mathematics, life and physical sciences, and oral communication, alongside core seminars and humanities courses, establishing a strong academic base. The second year introduces students to social sciences, government, literature, and their chosen emphasis areas, helping them begin to tailor their degree to their interests and career goals. During the third and fourth years, students continue to focus on their emphasis areas while integrating fine arts, additional electives, and advisor-approved courses, ensuring both depth and breadth of learning. The structure of the program encourages students to combine knowledge from multiple disciplines, equipping them with the versatility to adapt to a variety of career paths.
