COURSE CURRICULUM

Northwest Missouri State University offers a Bachelor of Science in Criminology designed to give students a thorough understanding of crime, the criminal justice system, and the social and psychological factors that influence criminal behavior. In the first year, students build a foundation with courses in composition, statistics, psychology, sociology, oral communication, government, and digital literacy. This combination ensures students develop strong analytical, communication, and critical thinking skills while understanding societal structures that shape behavior. The second year deepens their knowledge of criminology through courses such as rights of the accused, professional ethics, social psychology, introduction to criminal justice, and introduction to criminology. Students also complete core requirements in humanities, life science, physical science, and literature, providing a well-rounded academic foundation.In the third year, students engage with research methods in criminology and begin exploring electives across different disciplinary groups, allowing them to tailor their studies to areas of interest such as juvenile justice, forensic psychology, cybercrime, or social reform. This is paired with general electives to broaden their knowledge and develop interdisciplinary perspectives. In the fourth year, students focus on advanced topics and capstone experiences. This includes a research seminar in criminology, justice studies, and additional electives, ensuring students apply research and theoretical knowledge to real-world issues. The program emphasizes ethical reasoning, social awareness, and applied skills in criminal justice settings.Throughout the program, students gain practical experience and prepare for careers in law enforcement, corrections, probation and parole, social services, or further studies in criminal justice, law, or public administration. The curriculum balances theory, research, and applied learning, equipping graduates with the analytical tools, communication skills, and professional judgment necessary to address complex social problems and contribute to safer communities. By the completion of the program, students are well-prepared to understand crime from multiple perspectives and make meaningful contributions to public safety and social reform.
