COURSE CURRICULUM

The Communication Studies program at Northwest Missouri State University is a four-year degree designed to develop strong communication, critical thinking and interpersonal skills through a structured and progressive curriculum.In the first year, students focus on foundational communication and general education courses. Subjects like Composition I and II, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, and Communication Theory help build essential writing and speaking abilities. Students also complete courses in public speaking, life sciences, mathematics and fine arts to create a well-rounded academic base.During the second year, students expand their understanding of communication in different contexts. Courses such as Intercultural Communication help students understand communication across cultures, while subjects like American Government, literature, and social sciences broaden their knowledge. Digital literacy and elective courses further enhance technical and analytical skills.In the third year, the program becomes more specialized. Students study advanced communication topics such as Interpersonal Communication, Argumentation and Debate, Small Group Communication, Persuasion and Listening Skills. They also learn research methods, which are important for analyzing communication patterns and conducting studies. A minor is included to allow students to develop expertise in another area of interest.In the final year, students focus on applying their knowledge and preparing for professional careers. Courses like Global Experiences and Senior Seminar help students connect theory with real-world situations. Electives and minor courses allow further customization of the degree based on career goals.Overall, this program prepares students for careers in fields such as media, public relations, corporate communication, education and leadership by developing strong communication and analytical abilities.
