COURSE CURRICULUM

The Clinical Laboratory Science (B.S.) program at Northwest Missouri State University follows a structured 3+1 format, combining academic study with practical clinical experience.In the first year, students build a strong foundation in basic sciences and communication. Courses such as Principles of Biology, General Chemistry I, and Composition I help develop essential scientific knowledge and writing skills. Students also complete general education subjects like social sciences, which support overall academic development.In the second year, the coursework becomes more focused on laboratory science. Students study General Zoology, General Chemistry II, and mathematics courses like precalculus or calculus. These subjects strengthen analytical thinking and prepare students for advanced scientific work.The third year introduces more specialized and advanced topics. Students take courses such as Analytical Chemistry, Cell Biology, and additional general education subjects like communication and fine arts. These courses help students understand how to analyze biological samples and interpret laboratory results.In the fourth year, students move into full-time clinical training at affiliated hospitals or medical centers. This training lasts about 10 months and provides hands-on experience in real laboratory settings. Students learn how to test medical samples, use lab equipment and contribute to disease diagnosis. After completing this clinical year, students earn academic credit toward their degree.Overall, the program provides a balanced mix of theory and practical experience, preparing students for careers in hospitals, laboratories and healthcare settings where they play an important role in diagnosing and treating diseases.
