COURSE CURRICULUM

The Chemistry: General Biochemistry Emphasis Bachelor of Science program at Northwest Missouri State University is a comprehensive four-year curriculum that combines core chemistry concepts with biological sciences. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through courses in biology, general chemistry, mathematics (precalculus or calculus), composition, and a university seminar. The second semester continues with genetics, general chemistry II, psychology, and composition, helping students develop both scientific understanding and communication skills.In the second year, the program becomes more specialized with courses such as organic chemistry I, analytical chemistry, and communication, followed by organic chemistry II and cell biology. These courses provide a deeper understanding of chemical reactions, laboratory techniques, and biological systems. Students also complete general education requirements such as literature and American experience courses, ensuring a balanced academic background.The third year focuses on advanced scientific knowledge and practical applications. Students take physics, general biochemistry, and electives, along with social sciences. In the following semester, they continue with physics II and choose between molecular biology or macromolecular structure, along with fine arts and upper-level electives. This stage allows students to explore specific interests within chemistry and biology.In the final year, students complete a chemistry seminar, government studies, global and western experience courses, and additional electives. The program concludes with advanced biology or chemistry coursework and digital literacy. Overall, the curriculum integrates chemistry, biology, and analytical skills, preparing students for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, or graduate studies.
