COURSE CURRICULUM

The Economics Bachelor of Science program at Northwest Missouri State University is structured over four years to provide students with a strong foundation in economic theory, business knowledge, and analytical skills. In the first year, students focus on general education courses such as composition, U.S. history, statistics, computer applications, and oral communication, along with introductory economics through macroeconomics. The second semester builds on this with mathematical modeling, government, and physical sciences, ensuring a well-rounded academic base.In the second year, students begin core business and economics coursework, including accounting, management, and microeconomics. They also study business communication, literature, and various general education subjects such as life sciences, social sciences, and fine arts. This stage helps students develop both technical business knowledge and broader critical thinking abilities.The third year shifts toward advanced economic and business concepts. Students study microeconomic and macroeconomic theory, labor economics, finance, and business law, along with marketing and elective courses. These subjects deepen their understanding of how markets function and how businesses operate within economic systems. Electives allow students to explore specific interests within economics or business.In the fourth year, the program focuses on specialized and applied learning. Students take courses such as international economics, econometrics, operations management, management information systems, and international business. They also complete strategic decision-making coursework and additional electives. Overall, the curriculum combines theory, quantitative analysis, and practical business knowledge, preparing students for careers in economics, finance, business, or further graduate study.
