COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology Education Bachelor of Science in Education program at Northwest Missouri State University is a comprehensive four-year curriculum that blends scientific knowledge with professional teaching preparation. In the first year, students build a strong academic foundation through courses in biology, chemistry, communication, and education fundamentals, along with participation in professional learning communities that introduce them to teaching concepts. The second semester continues with zoology, advanced chemistry, composition, and introductory curriculum and assessment courses, helping students strengthen both their science background and teaching awareness. In the second year, students take courses such as special education, organic chemistry, precalculus, and botany, developing deeper scientific understanding alongside essential educational skills.As students progress into the third year, the program emphasizes advanced biological concepts and teaching methodologies. Courses include cell biology or biochemistry, evolution and diversity, educational psychology, and genetics. Students also begin focusing on classroom strategies, including curriculum design, classroom management, and adolescent psychology. They choose from specialized biology courses such as microbiology, anatomy, or physiology, allowing them to tailor their knowledge to specific teaching interests. Additional coursework in government and social sciences ensures a well-rounded education. In the sixth term, students study environmental issues, complete a biology practicum, and take courses in literacy intervention and history of science, along with physics and humanities.In the final year, the focus shifts to hands-on teaching experience and professional development. Students complete secondary school practicum, multicultural education, science teaching methods, and advanced practicum experiences. The program concludes with directed teaching and a professional capstone, where students gain full-time classroom experience and demonstrate their teaching abilities. Overall, the curriculum integrates rigorous science education with practical teaching experience, preparing graduates to effectively teach biology at the secondary level while meeting all academic and professional requirements.
