COURSE CURRICULUM

The Applied Health Sciences – Health Coaching program at Northwest Missouri State University is a comprehensive four-year degree designed to prepare students for careers in health, wellness, and behavior change. In the first year, students build a strong foundation through courses in biology, chemistry, wellness, communication, and fine arts, along with an introduction to health science. They also begin studying anatomy and physiology, which are essential for understanding the human body. The second year continues with core subjects such as nutrition, exercise physiology, statistics, abnormal psychology, medical terminology, biomechanics, and digital literacy, helping students develop both scientific knowledge and analytical skills.In the third year, the curriculum focuses on social and community health aspects, including courses in sociology, government, biomedical ethics, community health, and group psychology. Students also begin more specialized learning in counseling, athletic injury prevention, and health coaching electives. The program emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application, ensuring students are prepared to work with individuals and groups in improving health outcomes.During the final year, students advance to higher-level courses such as human pathophysiology, evidence-based practice, health promotion, and advanced strength and conditioning. They also complete a senior seminar and specialized electives in health coaching. A summer course focuses on health in later years, broadening students’ understanding of aging populations. The program concludes with courses in behavior change strategies and a profession-based experience, where students gain real-world training. Overall, the degree requires consistent academic performance, including minimum grade requirements in key courses, and combines science, psychology, and practical experience to prepare graduates for successful careers in health coaching and wellness fields.
