COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Music Education: Instrumental degree at Northwest Missouri State University prepares students to become certified K-12 music educators with a focus on instrumental performance and teaching. This comprehensive program combines music theory, aural skills, applied lessons, ensemble participation, and education courses to provide a strong foundation in both musicianship and pedagogy. From the first semester, students develop essential skills in music theory, aural training, class piano, and applied lessons on their primary instrument, while participating in ensembles such as the Bearcat Marching Band and Symphonic Band. Core education courses, including Introduction to Music Education, Classroom Behavior and Management, Adolescent Psychology, and Intervention & Assessment, ensure students are equipped to teach diverse learners in middle and high school classrooms. Instrumental methods courses, applied throughout the program, focus on band instruments, conducting, arranging, and curriculum design, giving students hands-on experience with instructional techniques. Music history and world music courses deepen students’ understanding of musical context, while field experiences and practicums provide real-world teaching opportunities, allowing students to apply theoretical knowledge in K-12 classrooms. Upper-level courses, such as Instrumental Conducting, Instrumental Composition & Arranging, and Methods of Secondary Instrumental Music, refine students’ leadership and instructional skills. Throughout the program, students are required to maintain recital attendance and participate in applied lessons and ensembles each semester, ensuring continuous performance growth. The program culminates with a senior recital and directed teaching experience, combining performance, pedagogy, and classroom management. Graduates of the program leave prepared to lead school bands, teach instrumental music across grade levels, and inspire students to reach their musical potential.
