COURSE CURRICULUM

The Mathematics B.S. program at Northwest provides a structured pathway to develop strong analytical, problem-solving, and quantitative skills. In the first year, students establish foundational knowledge with courses in calculus, statistics, computational reasoning, and an introductory course exploring mathematics-related fields, alongside core classes in composition, oral communication, and general education. This combination ensures students gain both mathematical skills and essential communication abilities.During the second year, students advance into probability and statistics, modeling, and additional math electives while completing general education courses in social and behavioral sciences, life and physical sciences, American government, and digital literacy. This year strengthens applied mathematical reasoning and prepares students for higher-level, specialized coursework.The third year emphasizes more rigorous mathematical concepts, including linear statistical models, linear algebra, and transition to proofs, developing students’ logical and theoretical reasoning skills. Students also take modern language courses, literature, social sciences, and general electives to maintain a well-rounded education and enhance interdisciplinary understanding.In the fourth year, students focus on advanced mathematics electives and complete a capstone experience through the Mathematics Seminar, which allows them to integrate and apply their learning. Modern language, fine arts, and additional general electives ensure students complete a balanced curriculum while fulfilling all degree requirements.Throughout the program, students gain a deep understanding of mathematical theory, applied statistics, data modeling, and problem-solving techniques. Graduates are well-prepared for careers in analytics, actuarial science, finance, education, research, technology, and other fields requiring strong quantitative reasoning.
