COURSE CURRICULUM

The general studies major at Northwest Missouri State University is an interdisciplinary and customizable program that allows students to explore diverse academic interests while developing core skills in critical thinking, communication, and problem-solving. The curriculum is designed to provide a strong foundation in essential college-level coursework during the first year, including composition, digital literacy, mathematics, sciences, oral communication, and humanities, alongside university seminars to prepare students for academic success. In the second year, students expand their knowledge with courses in American government, literature, social and behavioral sciences, modern languages, and their chosen emphasis areas, allowing for greater specialization and integration of disciplines. The third and fourth years focus heavily on the student’s selected emphasis areas, complemented by fine arts, modern language, and advisor-approved electives, which offer flexibility to tailor the degree to individual career goals or personal interests. Through this approach, students gain both breadth and depth of learning, fostering intellectual flexibility, cultural awareness, and analytical skills. Emphasis areas provide opportunities to concentrate on particular fields or themes, while advisor-approved electives and general courses ensure students graduate with a well-rounded education.
