COURSE CURRICULUM

The Communication Studies program at Northwest Missouri State University is a four-year degree designed to develop students' communication, critical thinking, and interpersonal skills.In the first year, students take foundational courses in writing, oral communication, and communication theory, including Composition I and II, Fundamentals of Oral Communication, and Public Speaking. Students also complete general education courses such as life science, math/statistics, fine arts, and American Experiences, providing a strong academic base for more advanced study.The second year focuses on expanding communication skills in broader contexts. Courses like Intercultural Communication help students understand cross-cultural interactions, while American Government and Politics, literature, and physical sciences broaden their knowledge of society and analytical thinking. Students also begin digital literacy training, global experiences coursework, and may start a modern language sequence.In the third year, the program emphasizes advanced communication techniques. Students take courses in Interpersonal Communication, Argumentation and Debate, Small Group Communication, Listening Skills, Persuasion, and Communication Research Methods. These classes prepare students for professional communication challenges and equip them with research skills. Modern language courses, general electives, and minor requirements continue during this year.The summer between the third and fourth year includes a hands-on internship in communication, allowing students to gain real-world experience in professional settings.The fourth year focuses on applying knowledge through capstone and elective courses. Students complete Western Experiences, Senior Capstone, speech electives, general electives, and remaining minor coursework. This final year helps students integrate theory and practice while preparing for careers in media, public relations, corporate communication, education, or leadership roles.Overall, the program balances theory, practice, and experiential learning to ensure graduates are well-prepared for professional success in diverse communication fields.
