COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Chemistry program at Montclair State University features a comprehensive and flexible curriculum designed to deepen students' knowledge across various subfields of chemistry and biochemistry. The core curriculum includes CHEM 570 Advanced Biochemistry, which focuses on the chemistry and function of biomolecules and modern biochemical analytical methods. Students are also required to choose two advanced courses from inorganic, organic, physical, or analytical chemistry, each exploring complex theories, mechanisms, and laboratory practices. Research options include either a Graduate Literature Search, involving a literature-based investigation and seminar, or a Research and Thesis option, allowing for laboratory-based independent research under faculty guidance, culminating in a thesis. Depending on the chosen research track, students must complete either 12 or 18 elective credits. Electives span a wide range of topics such as hazardous materials management, bioinorganic chemistry, drug design, protein structure, enzyme kinetics, nucleic acid biochemistry, and modern instrumental techniques like chromatography, mass spectrometry, and spectroscopy. Additional biochemistry-focused courses offer training in laboratory techniques and drug discovery processes. Students may also select up to six elective credits from approved biology courses, including experimental cell culture, modern genetics, molecular biology, and signal transduction. These courses provide interdisciplinary exposure to techniques and concepts in biomedical research. Overall, the program blends theoretical instruction with practical and research experiences, preparing graduates for careers in industry, academia, or further study in professional programs.
