COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics program provides a comprehensive curriculum combining core linguistic theory with a wide range of applied topics. Students without prior background in linguistics begin with a foundational course, APLN 500 Language and Linguistics, which introduces key areas such as phonetics, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. The program includes a series of required courses that cover syntax, semantics and pragmatics, phonetics and phonology, and research design. These core courses equip students with theoretical knowledge and practical skills essential for advanced linguistic analysis and research. Students must also complete 18 credits of electives, choosing from diverse offerings that explore sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, second language acquisition, language testing, translation, computational linguistics, and more. Elective courses allow for specialization in areas such as teaching English as a second language, forensic linguistics, computer-assisted language instruction, corpus linguistics, or language policy. The culminating experience involves either a research paper presented in a departmental colloquium (APLN 605) or a formal master’s thesis (APLN 698), both designed to showcase original research and critical analysis. Many courses emphasize real-world applications in education, law, healthcare, and technology, preparing graduates for a broad spectrum of language-centered careers. Topics such as multilingualism, language in digital communication, and American Sign Language further broaden students’ perspectives. Several courses focus on the intersection of language and society, including language and culture in minority education, languages of the U.S., and mobile communication. Students can also pursue independent study for in-depth exploration of specific interests under faculty guidance.
