COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biology major is a comprehensive 72–75 credit program designed to give students a strong foundation in biological sciences, supported by collateral coursework in chemistry, physics, and mathematics. Students begin with introductory courses in cell biology, organismal diversity, ecology, and molecular biology. Advanced topics like genetics and evolutionary biology deepen their understanding of biological systems. Students must also complete four elective requirements in the areas of cell and molecular biology, ecology, organismal biology, and an additional elective category, ensuring both breadth and specialization in their studies. These electives include a wide range of courses such as microbiology, neurobiology, virology, plant physiology, ecological fieldwork, and biomedical sciences, allowing students to tailor their education to their interests and career goals.Collateral requirements include foundational coursework in general and organic chemistry with lab components, a full year of physics (either algebra- or calculus-based), and two mathematics/statistics courses, including options in calculus and data science. These provide the analytical and quantitative skills necessary for scientific inquiry and graduate study.Additionally, students must complete 32 credits of general education courses, which include writing, literature, communication, humanities, computer science, fine arts, and social sciences. Requirements for math and natural science labs are fulfilled within the major. This balanced curriculum not only equips students with deep scientific knowledge but also develops critical thinking, communication, and research skills. The program prepares graduates for careers in biology-related fields, health professions, environmental science, or graduate and professional schools. Through lab work, research opportunities, and elective diversity, the Biology major fosters both academic excellence and real-world application.
