COURSE CURRICULUM

The Biochemistry major is a comprehensive 72-credit program that integrates core studies in chemistry, biology, mathematics, and physics. The curriculum is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in the chemical and biological sciences necessary for careers in research, healthcare, biotechnology, or graduate studies in related fields. Students begin with general and organic chemistry sequences, including lecture and laboratory components, followed by analytical and physical chemistry. The program also includes two semesters of biochemistry and their corresponding experimental courses, providing essential knowledge of the structure and function of biomolecules.Advanced courses such as Biophysical Chemistry and The Chemical Literature enhance students’ analytical and research skills. The biology component includes Cell and Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Genetics, and Molecular Biology, ensuring that students gain a broad and detailed understanding of life at the molecular level. Mathematics requirements are satisfied with applied calculus or standard calculus sequences, while the physics sequence (University Physics I and II) complements the biochemical studies by providing a strong grounding in the physical sciences.In addition to the major requirements, students must complete 33 credits of general education coursework. This includes writing, literature, communication, fine arts, humanities, computer science, physical education, and social sciences. Some general education requirements, such as mathematics and natural science laboratories, are fulfilled through the major. This well-rounded educational structure ensures that graduates not only possess specialized scientific knowledge but also critical thinking, communication, and analytical skills applicable to a wide range of professions. The program is rigorous and highly interdisciplinary, preparing students for success in graduate programs, medical or pharmacy school, or careers in scientific research and industry.
