COURSE CURRICULUM

The Animation and Visual Effects (VFX) program within the School of Communication and Media is a comprehensive 69-credit curriculum that combines foundational theory with hands-on experience in animation, modeling, visual effects, and storytelling. Students begin with core courses like Introduction to Communication and Media and Theorizing Communication and Media to ground their understanding of how media operates within society. From there, they dive into major-specific coursework focused on developing both technical and creative skills.The major requirements encompass a full spectrum of animation and VFX education. Students study drawing anatomy, digital color and light, figure drawing, 2D and 3D animation, modeling, compositing, lighting, rendering, and VFX for film. History of animation and industry preparation are also included, offering both context and career readiness. Key courses such as Visual Effects Compositing, 3D Animation and Rigging, and Interactive Game Development build technical depth, while the capstone experience, Thesis I and II, allows students to develop a professional portfolio project.Students also choose four major electives—two at the 300 level and two at the 400 level—from a wide array of options like Experimental Animation, Animated Development and Pitch Bible, Immersive Storytelling, and Collaborative Production. These electives offer students the ability to specialize in areas that align with their career goals, whether in game design, illustration, or advanced VFX techniques. Additionally, two elective courses from the School of Communication and Media further broaden students’ perspectives, with options from areas like film, journalism, and media studies.By the end of the program, graduates are well-equipped with the artistic, technical, and theoretical skills required for careers in animation, film, television, gaming, or other digital media industries. The program emphasizes industry preparation and creativity, ensuring students are ready to contribute to and shape the future of visual storytelling.
