COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Emergency Management curriculum at Metropolitan College of New York is a 120-credit program organized into eight purpose-based semesters, each designed to build progressively advanced knowledge and practical skills in emergency management and business continuity. In the early stages, students focus on foundational concepts such as assessment and planning, professional relationships, and risk analysis, while developing essential skills in critical thinking, communication, and understanding human behavior in disasters. Courses in human biology, psychology of disaster, terrorism studies, and homeland security provide a strong base for understanding crisis situations, supported by systems-focused subjects like emergency management, business continuity, and community health services.As students progress, the curriculum becomes more specialized and applied, covering areas such as disaster mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery. They learn to manage information and communication during crises, assess disaster needs, and develop and test emergency plans. Courses in law, policy, economics, and management help students understand the broader context of emergency response and organizational operations. Technical and analytical skills are strengthened through subjects like cybersecurity, accounting, GIS mapping, intelligence and investigations, and project management.In the later purposes, students focus on advanced topics such as crisis management for business and industry, long-term recovery planning, and building disaster-resilient communities. The program also offers career track options in emergency management or business continuity, allowing students to specialize based on their interests. A key component throughout the program is the Constructive Action projects, which serve as hands-on learning experiences where students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world scenarios, such as developing disaster plans or conducting risk assessments. By the final stage, students complete a comprehensive disaster plan, integrating all aspects of their learning. Overall, the curriculum prepares graduates with the practical, analytical, and leadership skills needed to effectively manage emergencies and ensure organizational resilience.
