COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Studio Art is designed to provide students with a comprehensive foundation in both art history and studio practice, preparing them for professional work or advanced study in the arts. Students pursuing a concentration in Studio Art complete 69 credits in their major, which includes a combination of art history courses, studio foundations, advanced studio courses, and elective or internship opportunities. The program begins with foundational courses such as Fundamentals of Art and Design, Basic Drawing, Three Dimensional Design, and Introduction to Digital Media, providing essential skills and techniques.Students then progress to core studio courses, including Basic Painting, Basic Sculpture, Drawing II: Media and Techniques, Basic Printmaking, and Basic Photography, alongside five additional studio courses at the 200 level or above. These courses allow students to develop technical proficiency, personal style, and conceptual understanding of artistic practices. Art history is integrated into the curriculum through courses such as History of Western Art I and II, along with two upper-level art history classes, ensuring students gain critical context for their work. Senior-level capstone experiences, including a capping course and a senior thesis portfolio, provide opportunities for students to showcase their artistic development and prepare for professional portfolios.The program also requires nine additional credits in art electives, related fields, or approved professional internships, giving students flexibility to explore digital media, communication, or other interdisciplinary connections. Core liberal studies requirements total 40 credits and include foundation courses, breadth distribution across philosophy, ethics, history, literature, mathematics, natural science, and social science, and pathway requirements, which ensure a broad-based education. An additional 11 elective credits allow for further academic exploration. In total, students complete 120 credits for graduation, combining creative skill development, critical analysis, and professional preparation in the visual arts.
