COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Marist University is structured to provide students with a comprehensive understanding of philosophical thought, critical reasoning, and ethical analysis. Philosophy majors must complete 36 credits in the discipline, beginning with six foundational courses, including Philosophical Perspectives, Ethics, Ancient and Modern Philosophy, Knowledge & Reality, and Logic or Symbolic Logic. Students then select a concentration, choosing from General Philosophy, Religious Studies, Ethics & Society, or Philosophy, Politics & Law, each requiring 12 credits of coursework tailored to the concentration’s focus. General Philosophy allows flexibility in additional philosophy courses, while Religious Studies integrates courses in religion. Ethics & Society emphasizes moral, social, and applied ethical issues, and Philosophy, Politics & Law combines philosophical and political studies, including courses in law, government, and political theory. Students conclude the major with a 3-credit capping course to synthesize their learning.In addition to the major, students take 3 credits in related fields, such as Technology for the 21st Century. The program also includes a robust Core and Liberal Studies curriculum totaling 37 credits, which encompasses foundational courses in first-year seminar and writing, breadth courses across philosophy, ethics, fine arts, history, literature, mathematics, natural science, and social science, as well as pathway courses that allow interdisciplinary study. Breadth and pathway requirements ensure exposure to multiple disciplines and the development of well-rounded critical thinking skills.Students also complete 47 credits of electives, which may be used to explore additional interests, deepen knowledge in philosophy or related areas, or gain practical skills relevant to their career goals. The total credit requirement for graduation is 120 credits, integrating major requirements, core liberal arts, and electives. This curriculum equips graduates with strong analytical, ethical, and communication skills, preparing them for careers in law, education, public policy, business, and advanced graduate studies in philosophy or related disciplines. Students graduate with a balanced, interdisciplinary education that emphasizes both theoretical understanding and practical application of philosophical principles.
