COURSE CURRICULUM

Marist University’s Games and Emerging Media program requires a combination of foundation courses, concentration courses, core liberal studies, and electives, totaling 120 credits for graduation.Foundation courses, totaling 25 credits, introduce students to games, programming, media tools, and the business side of gaming. These include courses such as Introduction to Games, The Business of Games, Game Studio, and Introduction to Programming, along with a selection of practicum or colloquium experiences to provide hands-on learning.Students then select a concentration in either Design, Writing and Culture (48-50 credits) or Technical Development and Programming (44-48 credits). The Design, Writing and Culture concentration emphasizes game design, user experience, interactive storytelling, ethics, media studies, video and audio production, 3D modeling and animation, and advanced programming or UX courses. The Technical Development and Programming concentration emphasizes software development, discrete mathematics, system design, artificial intelligence, computer graphics, human-computer interaction, and a selection of media or design courses for a well-rounded skill set.The program also requires core liberal studies credits (37-40), including foundation courses such as First Year Seminar and Writing for College, distribution courses in philosophy, ethics, fine arts, history, literature, mathematics, natural science, and social science, along with a 12-credit pathway component that allows for interdisciplinary exploration.Students may also take 10-17 elective credits to further customize their education, gain additional skills, or pursue personal interests in related fields. The combination of hands-on studio experiences, technical development, media literacy, and core academics prepares graduates for careers in game design, interactive media, UX design, programming, or other emerging media fields, providing both practical expertise and a strong theoretical foundation.
