COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Games and Emerging Media with a Technical Development and Programming concentration at Marist University is designed to prepare students for careers in game development, programming, and emerging media through a combination of foundational courses, concentration electives, and hands-on studio experience. The program begins with core courses in gaming, programming, mathematics, and digital tools, such as Introduction to Games, Introduction to Programming, Discrete Mathematics, and Digital Toolbox, paired with First Year Seminar and foundational liberal studies. In the sophomore year, students advance into software development, systems analysis, and game design, while also completing pathway electives and continued liberal studies, alongside repeated engagement with the Colloquium in Games to build critical thinking and communication skills in a gaming context. The junior year emphasizes applied media skills, including screenwriting, ethics in gaming, and concentration electives, complemented by additional pathway and general electives, with opportunities for practical experience through an employment practicum. The senior year consolidates learning through capstone courses such as Game Studio and Capping, along with advanced programming and data communications or database management courses, while providing space for concentration electives and an internship to gain professional experience. Across four years, students complete a balance of 120 credits that integrate technical development, programming, design principles, interactive storytelling, human-computer interaction, and media theory. The program’s structure ensures a combination of theoretical knowledge, analytical problem-solving, and collaborative, project-based learning to prepare graduates for the rapidly evolving gaming and emerging media industry.
