COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Media Studies and Production at Marist University is designed to provide students with both a strong theoretical foundation and practical skills in media creation, analysis, and production. The program requires a minimum of 90 Liberal Arts credits, alongside 48 credits within the major. All students begin with foundational courses in their freshman year, including Introduction to Media Studies and Digital Toolbox, which introduce essential concepts and digital tools. Majors then choose between two concentrations: Interactive Media & Game Design or Film & Television. The Interactive Media & Game Design concentration emphasizes user experience, game design, interactive storytelling, and digital production skills, with courses such as Game Design, Advanced User Experience (UX) Design, and Digital Game Development, complemented by electives in 3D animation and video/audio production. The Film & Television concentration focuses on media history, theory, production, and storytelling, including courses like Art of Film, Screenwriting for Film and Television, and advanced production electives covering lighting, cinematography, and digital filmmaking. Both concentrations culminate in the 3-credit capping course, Media Studies Capping, which integrates theory and practice.In addition to major coursework, students complete 43 credits of Core/Liberal Studies, which include foundational courses such as First Year Seminar and Writing for College, along with breadth courses in philosophy, ethics, fine arts, history, literature, mathematics, natural science, and social science. Students also complete a 12-credit pathway sequence that can address interdisciplinary topics and broaden academic exploration.The program allows for flexibility through six credits of electives in Media Arts or Communication, enabling students to either deepen their concentration or expand their knowledge into related media fields. While internships provide hands-on industry experience, these credits do not replace major or liberal arts requirements. Overall, the program combines rigorous academic study with practical application, preparing graduates for careers in media production, content creation, digital storytelling, and interactive media, while fostering analytical, technical, and creative skills essential for success in the evolving media landscape.
