COURSE CURRICULUM

Requirements for a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts at Marist University provide students with a structured yet flexible program, allowing for specialization in either Art History or Studio Art. All students complete 18 credits of foundation courses, including Fundamentals of Art and Design, Basic Drawing, two History of Western Art courses, a capping course, and Technology for the 21st Century.Art History concentration requires students to select five courses in Art History (15 credits) from offerings such as History of Photography, Renaissance Art, Chinese Art, Contemporary Art, and Museum Studies. Students must also complete three courses (9 credits) in an alternative discipline such as Foreign Language, History, Literature, or Studio Art, particularly if planning graduate work in art history.Studio Art concentration integrates both art history and hands-on studio work. Students take one 200–300 level Art History course (3 credits), three courses (9 credits) in a specialty track—Digital Media, Drawing, Graphic Design, Painting, or Photography—and four additional Studio Art courses (12 credits) from options like Basic and Advanced Painting, Drawing, Sculpture, Photography, Graphic Design, 3D Modeling, and Visual Book.The total requirement for a major in Fine Arts is 42 credits. Core and liberal studies include 7 credits of foundation courses, 15–21 credits of distribution courses covering philosophy, ethics, mathematics, natural and social sciences, and fine arts/history/literature as applicable. Students must also complete 12 credits in a Pathway program addressing interdisciplinary topics, totaling 34–40 credits.Electives allow for 38–44 credits, offering flexibility to explore additional interests or pursue a double major or multiple minors.
