COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts in Environmental Studies at Marist University offers an interdisciplinary and policy-focused approach to understanding and addressing environmental challenges. The major requires approximately 37–38 credits, beginning with core courses such as Introduction to Environmental Issues, Environmental Methods, Environmental Politics and Policy, and Geographic Information Systems or data/statistics alternatives. Students also study key scientific concepts through courses like Ecology or Earth Systems Science, and gain practical experience through either a research project or internship. The program culminates in a capping course that integrates environmental science with policy and real-world applications.A significant feature of the program is its flexibility through 12 credits of major electives, allowing students to specialize in areas such as environmental law, climate change, environmental chemistry, GIS, sustainability, or environmental economics. At least 9 of these credits must come from Environmental Science (ENSC) courses, ensuring depth within the discipline while still encouraging interdisciplinary exploration. This flexibility enables students to align their studies with career goals in policy, advocacy, sustainability, or environmental management.In addition, students complete 9 credits in related fields, including biology, environmental ethics, and government, providing a strong foundation in scientific, ethical, and political perspectives. The Core/Liberal Studies requirements (about 31 credits including foundation and distribution) ensure a well-rounded education, while 42–43 credits of general electives allow further customization, internships, or complementary areas of study.With a total of 120 credits required for graduation, the program balances environmental science with social sciences and humanities. Overall, it prepares students for careers in environmental policy, government agencies, non-profits, consulting, and sustainability roles, as well as for graduate study in environmental studies or related fields.
