COURSE CURRICULUM

The English program at Marist University offers students a comprehensive and flexible curriculum designed to develop strong analytical, creative, and communication skills. The program begins with foundational courses such as Introduction to Theatre and either Professional Writing or Creative Writing, along with a required capping course that integrates students’ learning. Students can then choose from three main concentrations—Literature, Theatre, or Writing—allowing them to tailor their academic experience according to their interests and career goals. The Literature concentration emphasizes the study of classic and modern texts, including courses like Classics of Western Literature, along with advanced seminars that explore global, ethnic, and theoretical perspectives. The Theatre concentration combines performance and production-based courses such as Acting, Stagecraft, and Directing with the study of dramatic literature, including works like Shakespeare and modern drama. Meanwhile, the Writing concentration focuses on developing advanced writing skills through courses in grammar, editing, and specialized writing, supported by upper-level writing and literature requirements. Across all concentrations, students are encouraged to engage in internships and interdisciplinary coursework, enhancing real-world experience and career readiness. In addition to major requirements, students must complete core liberal studies courses, including philosophy, ethics, history, mathematics, science, and social sciences, ensuring a well-rounded education. With a total of approximately 120 credits required for graduation, the program balances depth in English studies with broad academic exposure.
