COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Data Science program requires a total of 30 credit hours, divided between core courses and approved electives. Students complete 21 credit hours of core DSCI courses and 9 credit hours of electives chosen in consultation with their advisor. The core curriculum consists of seven required courses that provide a comprehensive foundation in data science theory, methods, and ethical considerations.The required courses include DSCI 310, Introduction to Data Science, which introduces students to fundamental data science concepts; DSCI 311, Optimization and Mathematical Foundations for Data Science, which covers essential mathematical tools; and DSCI 321, Algorithms and Software Foundations for Data Science, which develops computational problem-solving skills. Students also take either DSCI 411, Data Management for Big Data, or DSCI 421, Accelerated Computing for Machine Learning, focusing on handling large datasets and computational techniques. Statistical and modeling skills are addressed through DSCI 431, Introduction to Statistical Modeling, and DSCI 441, Statistical and Machine Learning. The program also emphasizes ethical responsibility in DSCI 451, Ethics in Data Science.Together, the core courses equip students with the technical, analytical, and ethical knowledge necessary to succeed in data science roles or pursue advanced research. The 9 credit hours of electives allow students to specialize or explore complementary topics, creating a tailored learning experience that aligns with professional and academic goals.
