COURSE CURRICULUM

Lehigh University’s graduate programs in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) are designed to deepen students’ professional knowledge, skills, and expertise within their chosen sub-specialties. Each graduate student develops a personalized program of study in consultation with a faculty advisor, tailoring their education to align with professional and research goals. Key areas of focus include computer systems engineering, which covers topics such as computer architecture, sensor networks, robotics, mobile and wearable computing, and networking; software systems engineering, emphasizing software architectures, parallel and distributed computing, object-oriented software, middleware, and web-based and networked software systems; and information systems engineering, which includes database management, data mining, bioinformatics, computer graphics, optimization, multimedia systems, expert systems, artificial intelligence, and computer vision.The department supports learning and research through a variety of computer and research laboratories. Facilities include specialized labs for robotics, networking, image processing, artificial intelligence, parallel computing, security, and web mining. These labs serve both research and undergraduate project needs, offering hands-on opportunities to apply theoretical concepts. Primary resources include more than 60 workstations, file and general servers, and GPU servers running primarily Linux, with access to programming languages such as C, C++, Java, Python, Rust, Go, Perl, Ruby, and Matlab, along with development tools, simulators, and computer-aided design software. Teaching labs are flexible, supporting multiple operating systems and providing a controlled software environment for immersive learning experiences in networking, network security, operating systems, high-performance computing, parallel processing, and system administration.The department’s network is connected via gigabit Ethernet to the university backbone and to high-capacity internet and Internet2 connections, while the university supports campus-wide wireless access, public computing sites, large-capacity servers, and technology-equipped classrooms. This combination of advanced facilities, flexible computing resources, and collaborative environments ensures that students gain both practical skills and research experience essential for success in computer science and engineering.
