COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Fine Arts in Game Design at Lawrence Technological University is structured to give students a well-rounded education in game development, combining foundational design principles, technical skills, and hands-on studio experience. In the first year, students build a solid base in design and mathematics, with courses such as Introduction to Design, Drawing and Design Geometry, Design Principles, and Intro to Game Systems, alongside college composition and humanities studies. This foundation introduces students to both the creative and analytical skills necessary for game design.In the second year, the curriculum emphasizes technical and applied skills, including 3D Environment Modeling, Digital Drawing and Painting, Level Design, and Scripting for Game Design. Students also engage in Human Factors and Ergonomics or Human Behavior in the Built Environment and participate in the Sophomore Portfolio Review, which ensures they are prepared for advanced coursework. Additionally, courses like Speculative Systems and History of Game Design provide a broader context for creative decision-making and design thinking within the gaming industry.The third year focuses on refining professional and creative skills. Students take Technical and Professional Communication, Creative Writing, and Visual Culture, while continuing technical courses such as Game Systems, 3D Animation Lab, User Interface and User Experience Design, and Integrated Game Studio. Multi-disciplinary Design encourages collaboration across various design fields, fostering teamwork and problem-solving in realistic game production settings.In the fourth year, students concentrate on senior-level projects and leadership. They complete Game Systems Senior Project 1 and 2, which involve designing, building, and showcasing comprehensive game systems. Courses like Design Leadership and Alternative Spatial Interactions enhance strategic thinking and innovative design approaches. The curriculum also includes natural science electives and CoAD electives, ensuring students graduate with both a technical and interdisciplinary perspective. Additionally, Professional Practice prepares students for industry expectations, networking, and career readiness.Overall, the program equips graduates with the skills to succeed in game design, level and systems design, digital environments, interactive storytelling, and collaborative production, providing both a strong theoretical foundation and practical experience for immediate entry into the professional game development industry.
