COURSE CURRICULUM

The Associate of Applied Science in Graphic Design at Lawrence Technological University is a 60-credit program designed to give students a strong foundation in visual communication, creative thinking, and professional practice. The curriculum combines core courses, studio work, and electives that allow students to explore various areas of graphic design, including typography, digital media, motion graphics, and user experience.In the first semester, students begin with foundational courses such as College Composition, Introduction to Design, Thinking by Drawing, and Foundations of Graphic Design. These courses establish the essential skills for visual problem-solving, critical observation, and conceptual development. Students also take introductory humanities courses like Engaging Ancient Texts to enhance their contextual understanding of culture and communication.The second semester emphasizes skill development and design methodology. Courses include Typography 1, Geometry in Art, Visual Culture, and Design Methodologies, along with elective options such as Digital Photography. These classes focus on developing technical proficiency, aesthetic judgment, and the ability to translate creative ideas into professional-quality work. Students also participate in a Sophomore Portfolio Review to evaluate progress and refine their visual storytelling abilities.In the third and fourth semesters, students advance to more specialized courses, including Typography 2, Motion Graphics, Investigative Graphic Design, History of Graphic Design, Digital Product Design, and User Experience & Interface Design. These courses incorporate hands-on projects and collaborative experiences that prepare students for real-world graphic design tasks. Professional Practice courses ensure that students gain the necessary skills in project management, client communication, and ethical standards in the creative industry.Overall, the AAS in Graphic Design balances creative exploration with practical skill development. It prepares students for immediate employment in graphic design roles or for seamless transfer into LTU’s Bachelor of Fine Arts in Graphic Design program, where they can further refine their expertise, expand their portfolio, and advance their career in the dynamic field of design.
