COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science degree in Pure Mathematics is a terminal graduate program emphasizing advanced theoretical study beyond the undergraduate level. The curriculum is designed to provide a rigorous foundation in key areas of mathematics, including algebra, real and complex analysis, and other advanced topics, through a combination of mathematics electives and structured sequence courses. Students select from core sequences such as Abstract Algebra I and II, Functions of a Real Variable I and II, and Functions of a Complex Variable I and II, ensuring both breadth and depth in essential mathematical theory. The program’s flexible structure allows students to tailor their electives to their specific interests while maintaining a comprehensive understanding of fundamental mathematical concepts. A central requirement of the degree is the completion of a thesis (MATH 67199), in which students conduct original research under the guidance of a faculty advisor. This research component develops independent analytical skills, mathematical rigor, and the ability to communicate complex ideas effectively, preparing graduates for doctoral study, academic positions, or professional careers that demand high-level problem-solving and theoretical expertise. The total program requires a minimum of 32 credit hours, combining coursework and the thesis project.
