COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science degree in Physics is structured to provide a strong foundation in both classical and modern physics while allowing flexibility through elective coursework and research experience. Core courses include Classical Mechanics (PHY 65101) and Quantum Mechanics I (PHY 66161), which establish the essential theoretical and analytical framework required for advanced study in physics.Students supplement these core courses with 12–14 credit hours of graduate-level electives, enabling them to tailor their education to specific interests such as condensed matter, optics, computational physics, or other specialized areas. Additionally, students choose 6–8 credit hours from major electives, including options like Electromagnetic Theory (PHY 55201), Thermal Physics (PHY 55301), Mathematical Methods in Physics (PHY 55401), Classical Electrodynamics I (PHY 65203), and Statistical Mechanics I (PHY 65301). These electives provide both depth and breadth, ensuring students develop a comprehensive understanding of key physical principles and methodologies.The program culminates in a 6-credit culminating experience, where students may undertake a research project (PHY 60098) or a thesis (PHY 60199). The research project allows students to conduct original investigations and produce a written report demonstrating mastery of experimental, computational, or theoretical techniques.
