COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Science in Applied Mathematics is a terminal, pre-professional degree designed to prepare students for advanced applications in the sciences, including engineering, biological, financial, and physical disciplines. The program requires a minimum of 32 credit hours, structured to provide both flexibility and depth in mathematical training. Students begin by completing two graduate-level mathematics electives at the 50000 or 60000 level, totaling 12–13 credit hours, allowing exploration of specialized areas of interest. In addition, students choose two sequences from four core options, each sequence consisting of two courses. These sequences include Probability I and II, which develop a foundational understanding of probability theory; Mathematical Statistics I and II, which focus on statistical inference and data analysis; Methods of Applied Mathematics I and II, emphasizing modeling and problem-solving techniques; and Numerical Analysis I and II, which cultivate computational skills for solving complex problems. Completing two sequences ensures that students gain both theoretical insights and practical expertise relevant to applied mathematics. Beyond coursework, the program requires students to complete a thesis through MATH 67199 – Thesis I, for a total of six credit hours, allowing them to conduct original research under the guidance of a faculty advisor and apply mathematical principles to a significant problem in their field. This combination of electives, structured sequences, and a culminating thesis ensures graduates possess a strong foundation in advanced mathematics, the ability to solve real-world problems, and the skills necessary for professional practice or further academic study.
