COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Fine Arts (M.F.A.) in Theatre Design and Technology program requires a minimum of 60 credit hours and is structured to provide a balance of theoretical knowledge, technical skills, and hands-on production experience. The core curriculum includes foundational courses such as Introduction to Graduate Study in Theatre, Professional Aspects of Design and Technology, Digital Rendering for Theatre Design, and History, Historicism, Theory and Practice in Theatre and Drama. Students also complete a professional theatre internship and, in some cases, a course in college teaching, which helps develop instructional skills for those pursuing academic careers. Additionally, students select a major elective from topics such as multicultural theatre, LGBTQ theatre, theatre history, costume history, or period style, allowing them to broaden their understanding of diverse theatrical perspectives.A significant portion of the program is dedicated to concentration coursework, with 36 credit hours required in one of four areas: Costume Design and Technology, Lighting Design, Scene Design, or Technical Direction. Each concentration includes a sequence of specialized courses that progressively build advanced skills in design, production, and collaboration. Students also participate in production collaboration courses, gaining real-world experience by working on live theatre productions, as well as elective courses that allow further customization of their training.The program culminates in a Master of Fine Arts Design and Technology Culminating Project, where students demonstrate their artistic and technical abilities through a comprehensive design or production project. This final requirement integrates their learning and showcases their readiness for professional practice. Overall, the program combines academic study, creative exploration, and practical experience to prepare graduates for careers in theatre, entertainment, and related industries.
