COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education in School Psychology program is structured to provide comprehensive training in the assessment, counseling, and intervention skills necessary for working with children and adolescents in educational settings. The program requires a total of 30 credit hours, with a combination of core courses, electives, and a culminating practicum experience. Core courses focus on key areas of school psychology, including the diagnosis of childhood disorders in schools, cognitive assessment, instructional assessment, and social-emotional assessment and interventions. Students also gain specialized skills in individual counseling techniques for rehabilitation counselors and school psychologists, as well as interventions for culturally diverse students. In addition to these core courses, students are required to choose one elective from options such as child and adolescent development, life span development, statistics for educational services, or the role of the school psychologist, allowing them to tailor their learning to specific interests or professional goals. The program culminates in a six-credit practicum course, Practicum I in School Psychology, which provides supervised, hands-on experience in a school setting, integrating theoretical knowledge with practical application. This structure ensures that students develop a well-rounded understanding of both academic and socio-emotional needs of students, as well as the skills necessary to assess, support, and intervene effectively in diverse school environments. While the M.Ed. prepares students with foundational skills in school psychology, it is important to note that additional advanced training, such as an Ed.S. or Ph.D., is typically required for state licensure and national certification as a school psychologist. Overall, the program combines rigorous coursework with practical experience to prepare students for entry-level roles in educational settings and to provide a strong foundation for further professional development in the field of school psychology.
