COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education degree in School Counseling is designed to prepare students for professional roles as licensed school counselors in kindergarten through grade 12 schools. The program provides the knowledge, skills, and practical experience necessary to support the academic, social, and emotional development of students in diverse educational settings. It meets the educational requirements for licensure as a Licensed School Counselor in the state of Ohio, ensuring that graduates are qualified to pursue certification and practice professionally.The program requires a minimum of 60 credit hours and combines core coursework, electives, and hands-on experience through practicum and internship components. Major courses cover essential areas in counseling, including Research in Counseling, Counseling Theories, Counseling Skills and Techniques, Multicultural Counseling, Group Work Theory and Techniques, Foundations of School Counseling, Counseling Children and Adolescents, School Counseling Program Management and Leadership, Orientation and Ethics, College and Career Readiness, and Introduction to Assessment in Counseling. Experiential learning is emphasized through the School Counseling Practicum and two sequential Internship courses, providing students with direct, supervised counseling experience in school settings.Students may also choose from a range of 12 credit hours of electives to tailor their program to specific interests, such as Diagnosis in Counseling, Foundations of Addictions Counseling, Motivational Interviewing, Psychopathology for Counselors, Family Therapy, and Legal and Policy Foundations of Special Education. This combination of core and elective courses ensures that graduates gain comprehensive knowledge and practical expertise in counseling theory, assessment, program development, and ethical practice.The program can be pursued on a part-time or full-time basis, allowing flexibility for working professionals, though full-time study is encouraged to fully engage with the curriculum and complete experiential components efficiently. Graduates emerge prepared to provide individual and group counseling, facilitate academic and career planning, implement school-wide counseling programs, and contribute to the overall well-being and success of students.
