COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Education degree in Health Education and Promotion provides students with a strong foundation in both theory and practice to prepare them for careers in health education and leadership. The core curriculum equips students with essential knowledge in health behavior, needs assessment and evaluation, program planning and implementation, communication and marketing, and strategies in health education and promotion. These courses build the skills necessary to design, implement, and assess effective health programs across diverse populations and settings. Students then select one of two concentrations to tailor their studies to specific career goals. The Community Health concentration focuses on leadership in community-based health settings, research, advocacy, and policy development. Students take courses in research and data analysis, administration and grant writing, and advocacy and policy issues, along with electives in specialized health topics such as substance abuse, sexuality, or other advisor-approved areas. This concentration also supports preparation for doctoral study in health education and promotion. The School Health Licensure concentration prepares students to teach health education in K-12 schools, addressing core competencies in school health instruction. Required courses cover sexuality education, drug abuse and violence education, biobehavioral aspects of disease prevention, and developmental approaches to teaching school health. Completion of this concentration can lead to an additional Ohio teaching license for eligible students. Overall, the program integrates theory, research, and practice to develop professionals who are capable of advancing health education, promoting wellness, and positively impacting communities through evidence-based interventions, leadership, and advocacy. Graduates are prepared for roles in schools, healthcare settings, governmental and nonprofit agencies, and community health organizations.Program credit requirements range from 31 to 33 hours, with core courses accounting for 18 credit hours and concentration-specific courses adding 13–15 credit hours depending on the chosen track. Students work closely with advisors to select electives that align with career goals and research interests, ensuring a personalized and professionally relevant educational experience.
