COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts in Economics degree equips students with the skills needed for careers as analysts in government, private industry, or financial services, and also prepares them for doctoral study. The program requires a core set of courses in microeconomic theory, macroeconomic theory, econometrics, and time series analysis, establishing a solid foundation in economic principles, quantitative methods, and applied analysis. Students then select one of two concentrations. The Economic Analysis concentration emphasizes advanced analytical and quantitative skills, including data acquisition and preparation, econometrics II, and quantitative methods in business administration, supplemented by electives such as stochastic actuarial models, probability theory, or a thesis or internship. This concentration prepares graduates for roles in policy analysis, research, and other fields requiring strong econometric and modeling expertise. The Financial Economics concentration is tailored for students seeking careers in the financial sector, covering advanced derivative securities, fixed income management, applied financial management strategies, and portfolio analysis. Students also choose an elective in mathematics, economics, or finance to complement their professional focus, with opportunities for internships to gain practical experience. Across both concentrations, students engage with rigorous coursework that integrates theoretical foundations, statistical and econometric methods, and applied projects, ensuring they develop the expertise to analyze complex economic data and make informed, evidence-based decisions. By combining core economic theory with specialized concentration training, the M.A. in Economics prepares graduates to excel in analytical, research, or finance-focused careers, while providing a strong basis for further graduate study.
