COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Arts degree in History provides a structured program of advanced study in historical research, interpretation, and methodology, with options for both thesis and non-thesis tracks. All students begin with the foundational course HIST 61002, Historiography, requiring a minimum grade of B-, and must complete at least one research seminar, typically HIST 61070, as part of the Seminars and Colloquia in History requirement. Students may choose to pursue additional requirements through either a concentration or a general program of study, with a total of 30 credit hours needed to complete the degree.For students not declaring a concentration, the program allows for either a thesis or non-thesis option. Thesis students enroll in HIST 69199, Thesis I, and must demonstrate reading proficiency in one or more foreign languages if required by their advisor. Thesis and non-thesis students also take electives in history and may include courses outside of history, ensuring coverage in American history, European history, and global (non-Western) history. Non-thesis students complete HIST 69399, Capstone in History, along with elective coursework to fulfill the 18 credit hour requirement for additional studies.The History for Secondary School Teachers concentration integrates historical study with education-focused coursework to prepare students for teaching and curriculum development. Students complete HIST 69499, Interdisciplinary Project in History, alongside 3–6 credit hours of history electives and 6–9 credit hours of education electives. Education courses include workshops, social studies teaching strategies, research in social studies, technology in social studies, curriculum fundamentals, and instruction improvement. This concentration allows students to apply historical scholarship directly to secondary education contexts while incorporating interdisciplinary approaches.Overall, the M.A. in History equips students with advanced analytical, research, and communication skills. Graduates gain the ability to conduct original historical research, synthesize knowledge across time periods and regions, and apply historical understanding in academic, professional, and educational settings. The program ensures a well-rounded mastery of historical inquiry, critical thinking, and pedagogical application where relevant.
