COURSE CURRICULUM

The graduate program in mathematics is designed to provide a rigorous foundation in advanced mathematical theory and its applications, requiring a minimum of 32 credit hours for completion. Students must first complete two graduate-level mathematics electives at the 50000 or 60000 level, accounting for 12 credit hours. These courses allow students to explore specialized areas of interest and deepen their understanding of advanced mathematical concepts. In addition, students are required to complete three more electives exclusively at the 60000 level, contributing an additional six to seven credit hours toward the major. Beyond elective courses, the program emphasizes mastery of core sequences that develop both theoretical and applied skills. Students must select two sequences from four options, each consisting of two courses. The Probability sequence, including Probability I (MATH 60051) and Probability II (MATH 60052), focuses on the principles of probability theory and its applications to complex problems. The Mathematical Statistics sequence, comprising Mathematical Statistics I (MATH 60061) and II (MATH 60062), provides a rigorous treatment of statistical inference, estimation, and hypothesis testing. The Methods of Applied Mathematics sequence, with courses Methods of Applied Mathematics I (MATH 62041) and II (MATH 62042), equips students with techniques for modeling and solving real-world mathematical problems. Lastly, the Numerical Analysis sequence, consisting of Numerical Analysis I (MATH 62251) and II (MATH 62252), develops computational skills essential for approximating solutions to mathematical models. By completing two of these sequences, students gain both theoretical insights and practical expertise.
