COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education in Special Education requires foundational courses in the major including Introduction to Exceptionalities, Family and Professional Collaboration, and Applied Behavior Analysis I. Students also complete general education and professional education courses such as Education in a Democratic Society, Educational Psychology, and Flashes 101, along with Kent Core requirements in composition, humanities and fine arts, and basic sciences.The program offers four concentrations. The Deaf Education concentration prepares students to work with deaf and hard-of-hearing students in a variety of classroom settings. Students complete coursework in American Sign Language, teaching methods for early readers, mathematics, science, and social studies, as well as audiology, language development, literacy assessment, curriculum methods, practicum experiences, student teaching, and professional inquiry seminars. Additional requirements include educational technology, health and learning strategies, and mathematics.The Disability Services concentration focuses on supporting individuals with disabilities in community, residential, and vocational settings. Students complete courses in disability studies, inclusive practices, characteristics of students with mild/moderate and moderate/intensive needs, assistive technology, autism spectrum disorders, and field experiences. Additional courses cover psychology, mathematics, and general education.The Mild to Intensive Dual License concentration prepares candidates to teach students with a wide range of educational needs from kindergarten through age 21. Coursework and field experiences include teaching mathematics and reading, health care needs, speech and language development, applied behavior analysis, curriculum methods, assistive technology, field experiences, student teaching, and professional inquiry seminars.The Primary Intervention Specialist concentration prepares candidates to teach children with diverse learning abilities from pre-kindergarten through grade 5. Students complete courses in early childhood education, speech and language development, inclusive practices, language and reading interventions, curriculum methods, early childhood services, teaming, assessment and evaluation, field experiences, student teaching, and professional inquiry seminars. Additional coursework includes mathematics and Kent Core requirements. Each concentration has specific credit hour requirements, ranging from 86 to 91 hours, with a minimum total of 120 to 125 credit hours to graduate.
