COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education in School Health Education prepares students to teach health education across K–12 schools and to meet Ohio’s multi-age teacher licensure requirements. The program integrates theoretical coursework, experiential learning, and extensive field experiences, culminating in a student teaching placement that allows candidates to practice teaching in authentic classroom settings. Core courses cover personal health, health education theories, drug use and misuse, human sexuality, community health education, program planning and evaluation, health coaching, and administration of school health programs. These courses provide students with the knowledge and skills to promote health literacy, wellness, and positive behaviors among students.Students also complete foundational and complementary coursework in educational psychology, adolescent and child development, human nutrition, communication, educational technology, philosophy, and special education to strengthen their understanding of diverse student needs and effective teaching practices. The program requires a minimum grade of C in all major courses to ensure mastery of essential knowledge.The optional Health and Physical Education concentration allows students to pursue dual licensure in both health and physical education, broadening career opportunities. This concentration includes courses in anatomy and physiology, introduction to physical education, motor development, fitness education, teaching methods for elementary and secondary physical education, adapted physical education, and assessment of learning in physical education and sport. Students also engage in specialized courses in invasion, net, target, and field games, gymnastics, dance, outdoor pursuits, and adventure education, alongside practical student teaching in both health and physical education. Additional courses in wellness, fitness, and sport provide opportunities for personal engagement in physical activity, ensuring candidates are both knowledgeable and physically competent educators.The program is designed to be completed with a minimum of 120 credit hours for standard Health Education students and up to 157 credit hours for those completing the Health and Physical Education concentration. Graduates are equipped to teach health and physical education effectively, foster student wellness, and implement evidence-based programs that support lifelong healthy behaviors.
