COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education degree in Physical Science at Kent State University equips students to become licensed teachers in physics and chemistry for grades 7–12. The program combines a broad foundation in the sciences with specialized content in physics and chemistry, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to teach these subjects at the secondary level. Students complete a rigorous sequence of courses, beginning with general chemistry and physics, including laboratory components, and progressing to advanced topics such as organic chemistry, analytical chemistry, inorganic chemistry, introductory biological chemistry, electronics, modern physics, and astronomy. Hands-on laboratory experiences, including intermediate physics labs, are integrated throughout the curriculum to reinforce theoretical knowledge and develop practical scientific skills.In addition to science coursework, students take education-specific courses to prepare for teaching. These include principles of teaching adolescents, methods for teaching science in secondary schools, field work practicum, secondary student teaching, and inquiry into professional practice. Students also complete courses in educational psychology, social justice in teaching, and reading and writing for adolescents and adults. Mathematics courses, including algebra, trigonometry, and calculus, provide the quantitative foundation necessary for understanding and teaching physics and chemistry concepts. The program also requires courses in exceptionalities and other general education requirements, including humanities, social sciences, and composition, to ensure well-rounded preparation.Field experiences and student teaching placements in local schools allow students to apply their knowledge in real classroom settings, gaining experience in lesson planning, classroom management, and instructional techniques. A minimum grade of C is required in all major courses, emphasizing the program’s high standards for both content mastery and professional competency. With a total of 122 credit hours, this program integrates rigorous science education, practical teaching experience, and professional development to prepare graduates to become effective, knowledgeable, and confident secondary science educators.
