COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science in Education in Middle Childhood Education program requires between 120 and 130 credit hours and is structured to prepare students for teaching careers in grades four through nine. The major requirements combine foundational education courses, subject-specific teaching methods and extensive practical experience. Students begin with core subjects such as education in a democratic society, educational psychology and basic mathematical concepts, which build a strong understanding of how students learn and how educational systems function. Courses in literature and storytelling further enhance content knowledge, particularly for teaching language arts.As students progress, they take specialized middle childhood education (MCED) courses that focus on teaching strategies and classroom practices. These include courses on teaching mathematics, integrating social studies and science, and understanding teaching and learning processes for young adolescents. Literacy development is a major focus, with courses on phonics, reading and writing, and teaching reading through literature. Additional coursework in curriculum design and organization helps students learn how to plan and structure effective lessons. A course on exceptionalities ensures that future teachers can support students with diverse learning needs.A key component of the program is the extensive field experience, culminating in a full-time student teaching placement, where students gain hands-on experience in real classrooms under supervision. This is supported by a final course focused on professional practice and reflection. In addition to major courses, students complete general education requirements such as psychology, geography, composition and fine arts. Students must also choose two teaching concentrations from areas like language arts, mathematics, science and social studies, allowing them to specialize in multiple subjects. Overall, the program provides a balanced mix of theory and practice, preparing graduates to become effective and adaptable middle school educators.
